Course Description
This course explores the concept of war in ancient Israel, as seen in Near Eastern inscriptions and biblical texts. We will observe that the ideology of war is not necessarily opposed to peace; instead, it is often presented as a means of restoring order. The experiences surrounding the fall of Samaria, conquered by the Assyrians, and the capture of Judah by the Babylonians fostered the hope for an end to war. However, apocalyptic circles updated the rhetoric of war, envisioning a final conflict between the forces of good and evil.
